SO YOU FOUND A PET YOU LIKE.
We are so excited, but are you eligible to adopt? Yes, there are eligibility requirements you must meet before adopting one of our pets. Please keep in mind, our main concern here is ensuring that our animals are NEVER forced to experience a similar situation from their earlier lives again. This means we have to be selective about our adopters.
The adoption application should answer most questions regarding your eligibility, but here is a general checklist you can look through to determine whether you might be a good candidate for adoption:
The adoption application should answer most questions regarding your eligibility, but here is a general checklist you can look through to determine whether you might be a good candidate for adoption:
- Are you a minor? Sorry, we will not adopt to anyone under the age of 18 without parental consent.
- Have you surrendered a pet to a shelter or rescue in the past? More than likely, this will disqualify you from adoption.* We view pet ownership as a lifelong commitment, through thick and thin. We need our adopters to see it that way, too.
- Do you currently have other pets who are NOT spayed/neutered? Unless for a legitimate medical reason, if your current pets are intact, you will most likely be disqualified from adoption. Part of our mission is to minimize the number of unwanted pets roaming the streets, which means fewer unwanted litters, which means responsible spay/neuter practices. Our adopters need to be on the same page.
SO YOU'RE eligible, what's next?
The adoption process is designed to be thorough and ensure a successful match between our pets and adopters. We will do our best to move through the process as quickly as possible; however, the process can take anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks (start to finish.)
1. Adoption Application -- you must complete the entire application to be eligible for adoption. Be as thorough as possible... the more details, the better!
2. Screening and Interviews -- a Brighter Days Adoption Counselor will review your application and either preliminarily accept you as a candidate, or reject you based on certain aspects of your application. If accepted, the process could include a follow-up phone call or email if there are outstanding questions about your application or if we need additional details. The screening process will also either include a home visit, or the request of photos of your home.
3. You're Approved! Meet and Greet -- It's time for you to meet your new pet! We will arrange for you to meet at a neutral location. This has to be coordinated with the foster family, so please try to be flexible and understanding! If you have other pets, we request that you bring them for the introduction at that time. We want to make sure all the new brothers & sisters will get along before sending your new pet home with you!
4. Adoption Contract -- You've met your pet and it was love at first sight! Now it's time to cross the t's and dot the i's. You will be provided an adoption contract to review and sign. This is a legally binding contract and should be treated as such. Read it thoroughly!
5. Adoption Fee -- This varies from pet to pet, but this fee is meant to cover the cost of care of your pet while it was in our care (vetting, feeding, etc.) Fees usually start at $50.00 and go up from there, depending on a variety of factors. Your adoption counselor will tell you early on in the process what the fee is for your specific pet.
